If you read my last post (on Saturday) you will remember that we gaily skipped off to the hardware store to shell out big bucks (to us) to purchase one SQUIRREL PROOF FEEDER!!

Well guess what, this chipmunk thoroughly enjoyed this new feeder IMMENSELY this afternoon! Look at those bulging cheeks!!

And the $7.00 bird feeders never got touched....However Mark being a good sport about this situation did say that the description on the expensive feeder said "Squirrel-Proof" feeder NOT "chipmunk -proof" feeder! Sigh....

Well, so much for that idea. I have seen this happen over and over. There is only one feeder that does not let 100% of the squirrels and chipmunks get to it. It sells for $49.00 at Walmart. Is a green metal box. It works. The birds are light in weight and can stand on the platform and eat. A squirrel or chipmunk weighs more and they stand on the platform and it drop down and they have to slide off and the other end of the platform covers the seed trays. I had one and nothing but birds ate from it. I felt sorry for the others and took it down and let them all eat. LOL
LOL...sorry, I couldn't help but laugh. "Squirrel proof" seems like an oxymoron. At least you know it's being well enjoyed. The pics are fun.

I wondered when I saw those feeders if they would keep the chipmunks out. How do they get up to the feeders???? Our Chipmunks only go below the feeders and can't get up to them. Squirrels will jump up--but I'm not sure how the chipmunks get up to your feeders. Is there a tree nearby or something they can climb??? If so--move the feeder away from their climbing places.
Sorry about that... I'm like you.. I don't feel one bit sorry for them and I do NOT want to feed them (either the squirrels and chipmunks).. There are TONS of nuts and acorns in our yard for them.
Hugs,
Betsy
funny, so now it's time to be creative and be smarter than the chipmunks. that's like the skunk in our yard who is digging to get the grubs and we are trying to trap him...
I'm sorry but I sort of expected that, too. Those little guys can get into anything. They can squeeze into the tiniest hole. When we put up the plastic dome, it was sort of funny (hilarious!)to see them try all the different ways to get at the feeder. It did keep them off though.
Been there. Done that. Had the same results.
Abraham Lincoln: Yup, I should've known better! I thought about the green box type feeder in the past and now I think that will be the next purchase. I guess the chipmunks need to eat as well...but there are tons of acorns around here for them.
Besides, it gives the dog something to watch from his soft cushion on the chair in the sunny window!
Lucy the Cat: I know, I might as well laugh over it all. It just bugs me that I paid $35 for a feeder that didn't solve the problem! oh well...
Betsy: None of the feeders is accessible by tree, branch, etc. to these little critters. They just run right up the poles. Mark thinks we should have just tried the metal things you put on the pole to thwart these guys. I think he is right!
Lin Floyd: Oh mercy, I will stick to chasing away squirrels anytime than trying to trap a skunk!
Kay: I should have tried the domes first. I don't know why I didn't thnk that the chipmunks could climb right into the new feeders.
Aunt Jean: I must tell you that the very first thought I had when I saw the chipmunk in the feeder was your photo of the squirrel in your feeder! I laughed too much over that and now its come back to bite me!!
Well, it sounded good. I don't know which give us the most grief -- squirrels or chipmunks.
Lol! I love it - he's a tenacious little guy!
Aw, poor little birdies. Well, that new green feeder from Wal-Mart should do the trick! Good Luck!
Those little critters are very clever. I wonder what it would take to make a bird only feeder.
On the bright side you sure got a cute picture. :)
Oh my! I really love chipmunks so I think that is really cute :)
I told my dad about the feeder you bought, and then I showed him the photos...we laughed so hard!!!!!!!!
He said, if a bird can get in, so will a chipmunk.
You have to admit, those cheeks are pretty cute.
Great post!
Oh wow Cheryl...sorry sight, but there goes my daily those of laughter. That chipmunk is so funny and he looks greedy too!
I remember the post about the squirrel-proof feeder... i was about to comment on the chipmunks -teehee...there it goes!
Good capture -your photos tell its story! *hugs*
