Enjoying fall

Friday afternoon Mark and I hiked a trail that was "new" to us. We hiked about two miles or so. There was alot of hiking uphill. It was perfect weather-wise for our adventure. I was amazed by the many rockwalls that were along the trail and spread out through the woods we walked through.
The fern looked so green against the brown leaves. It must be very hardy as we have had several 30 degree nights lately.

As I was dragging myself up, up,up the winding trail I happened to spot this huge tree trunk stump. But what really was eye-catching was the heart-shaped rock leaning against the stump. As many of you know we collect all sizes of heart-shaped rocks, something Ashton, Benjamin and I started many years ago. I wondered if someone long ago had found the rock and put it against the stump so others could enjoy? Since I couldn't bring this rock home a photo will have to do!

There were still alot of brightly colored leaves.
One of the many stonewalls out in the middle of nowhere!
This bright spot captured my eye today as Buddy and I were leaving for a walk next door on the Preserve.
I snapped this photo from the bridge that runs past our home, which is to the right side of Wildcat Brook. Alot of photos have been taken here by passerby over the years. Below is a photo of the red tree looking across from our home.
Lots of yellow foliage in the woods.
This photo was taken from the Preserve, directly across the brook from our home. There is a spot for one to put in a kayak or canoe. We had heavy rain yesterday so thought I had better get out and enjoy the day.

Oh wow, Cheryl, beautiful FALL colors. Each shot is amazing. The blooming flower has a drama of its own! Such wonderFALL weather after the rain. It's a good thing you and Mark decided to go out.

You've done it again, Cheryl: captured many beautiful scenes on your hike. Stone walls amaze me. Think of the hard work the builders had to put into collecting the rocks then arranging them into durable walls. I bet the heart-shaped rock was placed against the stump by someone who wanted others to appreciate its shape. The variety of colors in photo #7 are especially pretty.

The fern is so pretty and amazingly green in this weather. I love the heart-shaped rock and stonewall. Beautiful picture of the scene by your home! It looks like a professional picture or postcard.

Tes: Thanks for stopping by. I am very fortunate to live where we have four seasons, my favorites are summer and fall. Mother Nature shares her beauty all around us. I like your "wonderFALL" word!

Aunt Jean: Hello. I almost didn't bring the camera as I didn't think there would be much color left. These were just random shots.
As for the stone walls, it IS amazing how well they stand the test of time. I can only imagine how long is must have taken to build one and to build it securely. These walls were some of the nicest I have seen on my jaunts!

Lucy the Cat: Hello, thanks for stopping by with your nice comment. I think fall is being very kind by lingering a bit longer...before the snow flies!

Thanks for your visit. Looks like you had a wonderful hike. As for the empty nest, don't worry, if it's like around here, you will have them coming and going for a while. LOL Our youngest moved back home a year ago this month, and had planned on staying till June, then finding a place here in the same town. That way I could watch her little girl (9) in the mornings and after school. So far things aren't working out quite like she wanted, so they are still here. Which is fine, we have the space and it's nice having the granddaughter around. She's very entertaining. LOL We also now have a black cat living with us, he came with the daughter. Daughter is also taking classes two nights a week, working on becoming an RN, while still working full time in the Human Resource Dept. at Upper Valley Medical Center, which is about a 40 mile drive from us. We had to chuckle at the granddaughter when we were all talking about them moving, she said, I don't know why we just don't stay here, if Grandma is going to watch me in the mornings, after school and during the summer, we might as well not move. Makes sense to me. LOL

This is so lovely, Cheryl. I loved vicariously going on this walk with you. Such gorgeous fall colors!

P.S. I'm glad to see the little Budster is wearing his blaze orange neck scarf. Very important item in Maine this time of year, with hunting season approaching. Give him our best regards, please. Molly will be donning her blaze orange hat any day now.

I must say that everything looks like a paradise there where you live in an unspoiled wilderness. So to speak. The walls were probably to keep sheep in at one time don't you think?

Your reflection photos are wonderful. There's nothing like a sunny day in autumn.

Hi Cheryl, I am trying to catch up with my blogs today.. It may take me a lifetime... ha ha

Love that little church/chapel.. I know you enjoyed your special time with Ashton. How neat --to go back to places you all used to go. Great memories there. I love that picture of you and Ashton. It's GREAT.

Maple is a cutie... Buddy probably would have chosen NOT to have company!!!! ha

Your hike with hubby looked so much fun also. The Fall colors are still pretty up there. Ours are just now peaking.

At first, I thought that old tree stump/rock was a waterfall... ha ha

Glad to be home!!!
Hugs,
Betsy

It looks as if you had a perfect day for a hike. It was nice of someone to put that heart-shaped rock where you would be sure to notice it. I love the autumn colors.

Patty: So pleased you visited. As to the empty nest thing you mentioned, one of mine has been back for a temporary visit! Its just sooo quiet now that Ashton is in college! I would imagine having your granddaughter around would make the days brighter! Plus you are supporting your daughter while she works on her degree, thats what families are for!

Kay: I am glad you came along on our walk! Although after the past cool days I would like to swap the foliage here for yours.

Abraham Lincoln: Maine is such a large state and has much beauty. We are fortunate to live on the coast but within a couple of hours be in the mountain region. Best of all worlds. The stone walls probably were for sheep, I wondered if cows would have stayed in?

Linda Reeder: Thanks for stopping by. I have become fascinated with reflections, an idea I have gleaned from blogs!

Lin Floyd: Yes it is a wonderful place to live. Very pretty as well with the changing seasons.

Pete: Glad you visited and liked the brook photo. Now however the leaves are fast disappearing and will need to be raked up before too long!

Betsy: Welcome back! I would love to hike in your neck of the woods so to speak. And would love to explore some of the waterfalls you are so fortunate to have near.

George: I know, wasn't that a nice thing to do, place the rock where I would pass by?? I like to think that someone did so that others could enjoy it. It sure brightened my day.

Oh Cheryl! Those pictures are just beautiful! Maybe this is the time of the year for a visit! All we see around here are brown, green and blue (water). Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful world! :)
(PS: I love it that y'all have collected heart rocks! Jeffrey used to collect rocks since he was a kid. All kinds. We have a box of them, somewhere. Have to look for them. Maybe make a rock garden.

Abraham Lincoln: Hi, glad you stopped by. I really have enjoyed your Japan blog, my husband as well. He lived there as a child and then was stationed there himself later on. He isn't into blogs but likes yours!

Dez: Spring AND Fall are both great times to visit Maine. I bet Fall would appeal to you more though because of the beautiful foliage. You are welcome anytime to visit me! As for the box of rocks, I think it would be neat if you used them in a garden setting...that would be meaningful I am sure. Perhaps a garden of succulent plants?
