A crisp, cold winter's day

After several days of temperatures in the single digits and the wind chill at 0, I had enough of being cooped up inside. Heck, I am a Mainer for pete's sakes, I should be out frolicking in the icy, snowy dooryard! So BuddyTheElf and I set out for a short snowshoe trip through the backyard and along the power line. This first photo is of the brook (tide is going out) and looking towards our backyard. The snow has diminished alot after we had two days of heavy rain the first of the week. One news report said we had lost about 14 inches of snow during the storm.
A view from the edge of the brook looking towards the Zak Preserve that I am a caretaker of.
These humungous chunks of ice were in the brook today.
Looking into the culvert in the nearby pond. That is some very, very thick ice!
The pond still sleeps beneath its winter coat. I am starting to get anxious for spring, to hear the peepers and welcome back the lightning bugs! Its awhile longer but its something nice to look forward to!

Looks slippery when the ice is going to melt, doesnt it? whenever i come here, my imagination will run to this place, wishing that i could have the experience to touch them and feel the coldness! hope my wish will come true one day...

I want to hear more about where you love. You wear snow shoes to take a walk and you live by the preserve.
Since I have lived here in Nebraska almost two years this is my first experience with this much snow. I have never been near water that freezes so when I see blogs with pictures of people ice fishing or doing things on ice that is a lake or pond or something it makes me nervous.

I'm glad you were able to get out for a while at least. The thickness of the ice is very impressive to this southerner.

I've never seen anything like this. Living most of my life in Texas I saw very little ice and snow. I haven't seen a lot in Oregon either. Can't begin to imagine how you would go on with day to day life with this much snow on the ground for days on end. It is beautiful to look at though.

looks cold and wet. I don't think I'd last long outside but you do need fresh air and exercise. good for you!

Oh, it's so pretty there. I think it's wonderful that you got out for fresh air even though it's so cold and snowy. It's been very cold here in the low 20's and high teens, which is cold for me. We still really haven't had any snow in quite some time. Anyway, I can understand the wish for spring. That's what's so wonderful about the seasons. There's always something to look forward to.

Wow! Those pictures are pretty cool looking-- actually more like really cold. I wouldn't mind seeing it in person, but I'm sure it wouldn't take long for me to want to be back in L.A. It's a bit warmer here.

Still looks like you all have alot of ice and snow left --even still!!!! We had some sunshine today --and some of our ice melted. BUT--we still have tons of snow and ice around... It will warm up this week here.

Hugs,
Betsy

Hi cheryl. It sure looks cold there. It's been cold here too. We even got a little snow last night.

Zero degree? Burrr..that's COLD!! You must of have a lot of rain pouring down to have melted that much snow. I read that people can fall through thin sheet of ice blanketing lakes and ponds, how do you avoid falling in or the snow is so thick, you know there's no chance of falling in?

Haha!! I like the pond still sleeping beneath its winter coat.

Such a clever words.

I heard crows cawing early this morning. For me, that's always a sign spring isn't far away. Maybe I'm dreaming, but really, spring ISN'T far away.

It feels so good to get outside into natural day light. We are still in our warm el nino winter, just completing the warmest January on record. I think we'll light rain again today, but I might be able to get out for my walk.
I like snow and cold, but I would want it to go away sooner. Around here that's not a problem.

Gives me a chill just looking at the photos. I find as I get older, it's harder to keep warm. Glad you and the dog made it back home safely.

This is another side of snow, I've not seen before. We hardly have snow in Houston and when it does, snow, it's just a think blanket. Those are huge chunk of ice. Thank you for blogging about it, Cheryl! I've learned something new today. :)

That looks cold to me. I like winter but don't like the cold part. Or the ice part. Or shoveling the snow part.

These are beautiful snow scenes, but I'm also looking forward to spring. Looks as though you have gotten a lot of snow and ice. We have gotten some snow, but not anything in comparison to you. The photos are really nice.

CHHHHHAAAATTTTTEEERRRINNNNGGGGG..... JJJJUST looking at it! Beautiful, tho, I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at winter scenes! Especially, the ones that my personal friends are DANGEROUSLY WALKING IN! BE CAREFUL OUT THERE! :-)

Hi Cheryl, I learned something today, people from Maine called, "Mainers'. Ha ha, never knew that.
You sure got some fantastic Winter scenes your place...more like a Shangrila too.

We had -19'c couple of days back. Its cool now, about -5'c.
So far hardly any snow, but I guess we will get hit soon, as lots of kids praying hard for a snowstorm, then its, "back to bed", ha ha.
You have fun and keep well, Lee.

You mentioned watching the duck having a ball in the water today and the temperature was 22. But the water had to be at least 32 or it would have frozen. So the water is warmer than the outside air. The ducks and geese always lay around in the water or in running streams in the dead of winter. Its a lot warmer

Feb used to be the worst month for me, the long drawn cold, the dirty melted snow.

Back here in Auckland, it is 24 degrees. So much more comfortable than the 30s in Australia.

You will love New Zealand, winter or summer. Not so extreme.

Those pictures make me want to go get a hot chocolate. Hope you're staying warm.

Spring should be here soon! Must get a photo shot of the first Robin...LOL!

Several people, like you, have made comments about us in the American Gothic picture. Those were middle times, I suppose, in our relationship. I will have to make a post about that and what happens later on.

reanaclaire: I hope you get your wish to experience winter's ice! It is indeed very cold but beautiful.

TechnoBabe: I am lucky to call Maine home where winter can be looonnnggg...So in order to tolerate it three years ago I took up snowshoeing with my husband. We can head out from our doorstep and enjoy the woods around us. The ice in these photos is very thin, I too am very wary of going out onto frozen lakes and ponds. Unfortunately every winter tragedy occurs when someone falls through thin ice. This ice in my photos is just a coating really on top of the ground.

George: I figure if its going to be winter for several months I might as well enjoy it and get some exercise as well!

Linda: I would love to live in a state that is warm most of the time! I love the heat. However Maine has four seasons to enjoy so there is always something to look forward to! We do lots of reading in the winter!

Gary's third pottery blog: yessiree bob, I do like my sunshine! I sat on the doorstep in the balmy high 20s yesterday with my dog and enjoyed a cup of coffee in the sun. Buddy didn't have any coffee though.

Changli: Thanks!

Lin Floyd: Some days I just "go for it" bitter cold or not, just to get some fresh air! It always makes me feel better.

LucytheCat: I must admit I am beginning to wonder just when winter IS going to end! I can confidently say "enough is enough"!

arlee bird: I think I could handle some LA weather right about now.

Betsy from Tennessee: We do have something in common now, the snow and cold! Hope its warming up quickly for you all.

James: Did you have more snow? I am so enjoying your California photos. They brighten the day!

Rose Belle: One must be very careful around iced over lakes, streams and ponds. I never go on anything that I question. Most of the icy covering in the backyard is just a coating on solid ground. One must exercise caution before going out on large lakes to ice fish or skate or snowmobile.

rainfield61: I am so glad you liked my words!

Aunt Jean: I heard crows noisly cawing yesterday as I sat on the doorstep with Buddy and a cup of coffe-for only a few minutes but still....

Linda Reeder: I agree, getting out into the naturel light is great. I always come in feeling better! I try to get out to avoid "cabin fever" which usually shows up about now!

Patty: I sometimes feel that the cold is right in the old bones! Brr..some days I just can't seem to get warm!

Tes: Glad you stopped by and enjoyed the post! Take care!

Abraham Lincoln: Believe me, I am trying to talk my husband into retiring (whenever that will be) to somewhere nice and warm!

Brenda Kay Ledford: Thanks for coming by and leaving your nice comment.

Dez: I behaved myself out there in the cold world! I was very careful! Thanks for thinking about me!

Uncle Lee: Now you know what a "Mainer" is! I remember hoping for storm days when I was in school and then my three children used to wish hopefully for them! And yes, we all went back to bed!

Ann: I so would love to visit New Zealand! I am becoming more and more intrigued!

Bull Rhino: Hot chocolate is perfect for these cold days here, as well as lots of coffee!

Pete: I did see a group of robins a couple of weeks ago, I believe around the 16th of January. Several people saw them!

Abraham Lincoln: I would like to hear more about you and Patty's "story".
