Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves

When Mark and I were in New Hampshire recently we spent a day at Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves in Kinsman Notch. I didn't happen to notice the above sign UNTIL we returned from our adventure. I probably would have been waiting on the nice, cool patio for Mark to return if I had.
Hmmm....this didn't look TOO bad....down, down and down....
Down, down, down, down and MORE down!
Will these steps EVER end?
First heart shaped rock I spotted on the way down into the gorge.
This little heart was near the first cave we explored.
Then it was time to continue on...and upwards!

Thank goodness for seats to rest on....
Its a good thing we always carry lots of water....
It was so humid and seemed to get more so with each passing moment...
Will it ever end??
Tight fits here and there....I explored two caves and left the rest to Mark. He had a great time exploring, crawling on his stomach in some, or easing through on his back in others....
I spied this big heart while waiting for Mark to emerge from a cave...
A pretty waterfall! I immediately thought of Betsy and George.
Are we there yet??

We finally made it out alive after what seemed days! Our little jaunt was held up at one point when Mark, sliding through one of the caves, pushed the backpack through ahead of him and it promptly fell into a huge underground pool! Good thing Mark didn't fall in! My cell phone, our water, snacks, bug spray, first aid kit and extra batteries for my camera were in it. Luckily for us an attendant was nearby filling lamps for the caves when she saw Mark peering over a boulder trying to spot the backpack. She got a pole with a hook on it and was able to reach waaayyyy down into the pool and retrieve the backpack! I wonder if this has happened before? For some reason Mark didn't leave the backpack with me on this exploration but he will from now on! The cellphone couldn't be saved nor the batteries and bandaids but the backpack came through it fine. That backpack goes with us everywhere. But all in all we had a fun day exploring, it was hard on my body but the fun and memories from the trip override any pain. Life is too short!

That looks like a beautiful area and very fun to visit. However, if it came to crawling through small areas - not going to happen with my claustrophobia.

What a beautiful outing, Cheryl. I would love to have done this, but like you I would not enter a tight fitting cave! Nice hearts!

That was a "LOT" of steps!

Oh My..... That looks JUST like a trip that George and I took when we hiked into Cloudland Canyon, GA... LOTS of steps---but a couple of gorgeous waterfalls....

Glad you made it ---and glad you recovered the backpack... Sorry about the cellphone.

Thanks for sharing... I'd love to go there sometime.
Hugs,
Betsy

It looks like a great hike but I would have had to skip the crawling in caves part too.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe you did that. I would not have even started it.

The amount of wood and work it took to make all those stairs is amazing.

Sorry, I don't go in close places, not for anyone.

You are a real trooper.

I really enjoyed the hike through your pictures -- I'm not sure I could have made it in person. Thank you for thinking of us at the waterfall. I'm glad you were able to retrieve your backpack, but it's too bad about the cellphone and batteries.

ah adventures. We hiked down to some indian dwellings in arizona and then had to come back up. I barely made it and was sore for a week. We are getting older but it's so fun to explore.

So that's the excitement in exploration! And you have to get a new cellphone after that?

Oh my goodness! That is such a looonnnggg flight of stairs!! Love the disclosure sign that's posted. LOL!

I went on a hiking field trip with my daughter's 2nd grade class last year. We had to walk up (I think) 130+ steps to reach the top. When we arrived at the top, two parents collapsed. It was so scary. Luckily there was a parent with us who is a nurse. She immediately jumped into action.

Gorgeous photos! What a beautiful place. However, I got tired just looking at all those steps. Good grief! Love the heart shaped stones though.

the place looks so beautiful. we have some places like that here only there are no steps going like that.its a natural pathway making it all the more difficult to climb up and down.

It must be a great trip, though tough but ended up with some great hearts.

Whoa! What an adventure. I'm sure glad you got your camera back from the pool! The climb sounds strenuous, but the scenery looks spectacular.

I really like the way your blog looks. My favorite colors too. I am glad you did well on the adventure at Lost River Gorge. It must have been okay for your myalgia all the stairs. It looks like a long way, more than 3/4 mile. But looks can be deceiving. Anyway, so glad you two had a great time there.

It's so pretty there! That's a workout, but I think it's great that you were able to do it, Cheryl. I'm sure you felt it but it looks like it was worth it. I'm sure my knees would have protested on the descent. I can see where it did seem endless but from the comfort of my home and chair, it looks so beautiful and inviting.

I'm sorry about your phone! Ugh.

they need to add a note on that sign: hang onto your back pack!

Cheryl, I'm so glad it was the backpack that fell and not Mark! (He couldn't be replaced as the cellphone and batteries can!) You did a lot of climbing but I'm glad you took a little break now and then to find the hearts along he way.

The steps are a good exercise and the cellular phone incident a good lesson in how to take care of small valuable items.
The pictures are awsome!
