Kayaking trip

Since the temperature today was to be in the 90's (first time since May 21!) we thought it would be nice to take the kayak out into the Sheepscot River. Mark has a lot of work getting ready for a kayak trip. He drags the very heavy kayak across the yard, hoists it up onto the Jeep and then firmly secures it on the roof. Meanwhile I supervise the process...
We have been out on the ocean many times in the kayak. We are fortunate that in our area there are many public landings to put a boat in. We put in at Porter Preserve, one of our favorite hiking spots. A very kind and generous couple donated some land near the Preserve so that the local lobstermen would have a place to store their traps, access their boats and traps and help preserve some of the waterfront that is rapidly disappearing in our area. As you can see the dock and float are top-notch, built by volunteers.
We headed up the river with a nice ocean breeze making the trip just perfect.
This rock (at low tide) was covered with seagulls and cormorants.
In the lower left of this photo is a seal. We also saw two harbor porpoises on our trip as well.
Osprey nest.

Channel marker.
We were in a sheltered cove here. As we headed back to shore the wind picked up and it was a very hard paddle back. We have to watch out for speeding boats as well!

Back on land. We spent four hours on the water and estimated that we covered about five miles. It is fun to explore different locales and we get exercise as well as being outdoors.

I couldn't resist posting this photo of a heron. We hiked Porter Preserve last night and spent some time sitting on the rocks, enjoying the sunset. The heron was on a rock off-shore.

Geez. I'd like to have spent August 15 doing exactly what you did. I'd love to see the Maine coast from a small boat or kayak some time. I'm sure it's a perspective much different from what I've seen. (Good job supervising.)

Oh Cheryl, That looks heavenly. I'd love to do that. The water looks so inviting ---and I'm sure you had a wonderful day.

I cannot believe that nest sitting on top of that dead?? tree.. How can that be sturdy???? But I guess the Osprey know what they are doing...

That last picture of the heron was incredible also.. Looks like a gorgeous sunset.

Glad you had such a wonderful day.

Hugs,
Betsy

I've often wished for an opportunity to kayak. I would gladly help with the heavy lifting for the chance to go. It looks as if you have a perfect spot for kayaking. Thanks for taking us along through your wonderful pictures.

Cheryl I could almost smell the sweet Maine air, looking at those photos! I would love to try kayaking sometime. Steve and Camden go canoeing quite often...I'll need to see if I can get in on their next adventure...
