Oh Ashton, what would we do without you??

Miss Ashton is in her first year of college, studying to be a nurse. She put some of her CNA skills to use on BuddyTheElf last weekend. Poor Buddy has severe reactions to each vaccination he has, even after being pre-injected with benadryl before each shot. He is down for the count so to speak for several days afterwards. In the past he has been so sick that he has had to have iv feedings. Once he has returned home from the vet visit he usually goes right into his crate where he lays on lots of soft blankets. Its his comfort spot.
Ashton graced us all with her presence for a bit this weekend. She is still in college, working on the OB floor at another local hospital plus working at the nursing home. Her last payweek she worked 110 hours! She is much more ambitious and driven than I ever thought of being at 18 I think. Ashton felt as badly for Buddy as we did and set about to make him feel better. Nurse Ashton filled a tube sock with rice and warmed it in the microwave for just a short bit and let it cool a bit. She wrapped the sock in a small towel and placed it against Buddy's sore hip. It seems the pre-injection site hurts him more than the actual injection site. Anyhow, he laid in his crate quietly for awhile and Nurse Ashton kept an eye on him. In the meantime she cleaned up the spilled rice from the kitchen floor. She got a little bit carried away pouring rice into a tube sock. As the sound of rice hitting the floor reached my ears she said "well, its no use crying over spilled rice". Sigh.
She gave up using the dustbuster after a bit, she would have been vacuuming for hours with that!
Long story short, Mom ended up vacuuming up the spilled rice! Sometimes you just have to do it yourself!

Here's a very dainty heart that Mother Nature left for me to enjoy while walking the other day.

P.S. There is a conspiracy in this house! The two guilty parties names' are right here in pink and white! Sigh....here I am slowly, very slowly plugging away at WeightWatchers and this is going on right in front of me!! Ashton has her own blog now by the way. She's been too busy to blog lately but posted just last night. Check it out here http://ashtonanne.blogspot.com/.

Oh dear, sabotaged by your own daughter!
BTW, a broom and dustpan work very well for spilled rice. Done in a minute.

nice to have a nurse in the house...I bet Buddy was happy too...why is it the Mom is always left with the clean up???oh well, that's the way the cookie (oops) crumbles or the rice falls in your case...

That is a lot of hours to work. For a young woman she has much energy and stamina. What a nice thing to help take care of the dog and to share cookies too.

nice to have a nurse handy...keep your focus on weight loss, it's a life style change to commit to and the results are worth the efforts and the missed cookies. reward yourself with a luscious piece or fruit or sugar free goodies. I do!

Oh, Cheryl, I know you told me about Buddy needing to be pre-injected before his shots, but I had not idea how hard it was on him. Does Buddy really need all those shots that he's being pre-injected for? I'm just thinking out loud here. I don't know much about doggies' needs but I do the very minimum for the kitties as far as shots go. I've heard a lot of bad things about vaccines. That being said, I fully realize that some are necessary.

Ashton is amazing! I can't even fathom working all those hours and going to school. I think that's awesome!

I had to laugh at the conspiracy. I hate to say it but both those snacks look really good. I hope you're able to stick with your eating program!

I love the delicate heart leaf!

Ashton has a sweet look about her, Cheryl, a great nurse in the making. My granddaughter Katie, a junior in high school is taking courses to be a nurse. Works as a nurse's aid at a nursing home too. If you ask me, they are both very special young ladies!

I can tell you are proud of your daughter as you should be.
Hope Buddy is doing better now, and I think I would of used a broom and dust pan insead of a vaccum for all that rice....Hugs

I hope Buddy feels better soon. My parents have two dogs and it's always hard when they're not feeling well so I know what you're going through. Yah for Ashton too! Appying what she's learning in school at home. It's always good to have a "doctor in the house" :)

Hi Cheryl, You should do some research on-line. I think if dogs receive their initial vaccines, they are good for many, many years. Perhaps Buddy could forgo some misery. Also, have you ever tried giving him Arnica pills or Rescue Remedy before a trip to the vet (both found at Health Food stores)? Aston has just the right touch and dedication to be a great nurse! PS I love Nature's heart.

How lucky Mr. BuddyTheElf is --to have a nurse in the family --to take care of him... Poor puppy!!! Hope that rice helped!!!

Where does that daughter of yours get all of her energy??? Even at 18, I never had THAT much energy. I know you are proud of her.

Hugs,
Betsy

I'm so glad Ashton knew what to do to help Buddy. Sounds like she's going to make a wonderful nurse. She's a very lovely young lady. I know you are proud of her. Yes, cleaning up rice can be a challenge.

I'm shocked Ashton is tempting you with goodies, but I am glad to learn that she has been such a good nurse for Buddy the Elf.

Hi Cheryl, its always heartwarming read your blog postings....and add the touch of your sentimentality of that 'heart shaped' dried leaf....
Somehow a lovely lady like you brings to mind Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Patsy Cline, Slim Whitman, Nat King Cole, Ace Cannon....if you know what I mean.

Other women brings to mind Hip Hop or whatever hop....or Elvis.
You stay young, stay beautiful and keep a song in your heart, Lee.

Oh poor Buds! Well done Ashton though...makes me think I might just steer my little one to the medical profession as it's obviously beneficial for the whole family to have someone in the know when it comes to medicine. Oh your kitchen is massive!!! I so want one like that!!! EXACTLY like that!!

My dog, Grace, also needs a preshot of Benadryl before vaccinations. She doesn't have as serious a reaction as your dog did. How fortunate to have such a lovely daughter, Cheryl! You are truly blessed. I'm sure you already know that, though.

Hi Everyone! The rice was eventually cleaned up by MOM (its just easier that way!!) and Buddy is back on all four paws, raring to go. As for his vaccinations, I think he might have two years between these and the next ones, instead of one year. His rabies shot is every three years (the law was changed from one year to three years) and he has 2 baby aspirin (81 mg. each) twice a day after the injections. He just lays in his crate for several days afterwards, its hard on us as well! But the nice warm rice pack seemed to really get him up and going! Its good to have a future nurse in the house for sure. Thanks for all the lovely comments as always and hope you all come back again and again!
