A simple request...

Ashton called me Friday night from her job at the nursing home. One of her patients said his head was "cold" so she thought about how could she "comfort" him. She asked me if I would knit him a hat. I immediately told her I was starting on her afghan, never had made a hat, I didn't have a pattern, etc., etc. Then it hit me, if a 17 year old girl was kind enough to try to help him out, how hard would it be for me to take some of my free time and find a pattern and a skein of yard? I have never knit one before but found a beginning to knit book and voila, a pattern for a very basic hat. Ashton had told me she had a skein of blue yarn hidden amongst the "debris" in her room. After doing a search and rescue for the blue skein of yarn, I started knitting and completed it in about 5 hours. I thoroughly enjoyed the project and afterwards felt really good about it. I put this into the "pay it forward" category. It was such a simple request and a simple project but the satisfaction I derived from making the cap was thought-provoking. Instead of watching t.v. or being on the computer at night, why not knit for someone who might want a little bit of comfort? I hope the gentleman will be comforted by his new hat and knows that someone cares for him, my daughter was tickled that I had done it and the lesson I learned was priceless. Later when Ashton got home from work she asked me if I would knit a hat for another patient so I am now knitting her a rose hat...

Love that hat, Cheryl! Beautiful job. It sounds as if you'll soon be declared the official hat knitter for the folks at the nursing home.
