Last weekend we took our niece Elizabeth (to us,Tiz) for a kayaking trip. She had been eagerly awaiting a trip for awhile. It was a beautiful day to be outside and especially on the water.

Mark lugged, tugged, pulled and carried the kayak to the dock at the Porter Preserve. There is also a public dock on the Sheepscot River.

Sometimes I wonder if its worth it to go out for a paddle as Mark has to load and unload the kayak by himself! When we get home he unloads...carries...and stores it in our backyard.

Here is our new Captain....Miss Elizabeth. She was well prepared for our adventure, even putting her little camera into a ziploc bag, just in case! She even brought along a water bottle and was ready to go.

The Captain and First Mate.

The "former" Captain and the new Captain.... I didn't have to lift a paddle so to speak at all! I sat back and enjoyed the trip. Elizabeth paddled the entire trip!

We paddled up into the river. The above photo is of the Trevett Country Store. It is literally on the water. It is part of Boothbay, where we live, but we have several "parts" of town. This building houses the Post Office for the residents who live on nearby Barter's Island and Hodgdon Island. They are both connected by bridges to the mainland.

A photo of the drawbridge that allows bigger boats than ours into Back River. We just paddle underneath, no waiting for the bridge tender to open the bridge by hand.

Each lobsterman has to have their own buoys to mark trap locations. They all have their own colors and have to be registered. This buoy is the most unique I have ever seen!

Paddled past a floating raft of traps.

A calm morning to be on the water. We try to get out early as the wind usually shifts in the early afternoon and its tiring to paddle "back".

We enjoyed watching the seals on ledges. We saw several seals swimming nearby, they checked us out as we do them!

See the bench high up on the rock? Thats "our bench", the one that we have to stop at while hiking the Preserve.

The bench occupied one evening last spring.

It looks different when you are on shore when compared to being out on the water, doesn't it???? Beautiful pictures along your way.... Glad Capt. Elizabeth got to go. Hope she got some great pictures also.
Hope you are feeling good, Cheryl.. You look TERRIFIC...
Hugs,
Betsy
Oh, I just love these little day trips you take. Oh how I wish I could have spent more time in Maine.
The photo of open water with the trees in the distance really gave a sense of being there, when fully enlarged. The seals look like they could use a comfortable bench or a nice spongy supportive cushion.
You've made a great life there in Maine, Cheryl!
Hi Cheryl...Way nice of you and your "husbands strength" to take your niece kayaking!!
Sounds like she earned her new title!!
I just love our ME coastline...never get tired of seeing the sites!!
Nice photos and post!!

Your Maine world is so scenic, Cheryl. I enjoyed going along in the Kayak with Miss Elizabeth. Those seals were a nosy bunch! Glad you had such a good day.
These are gorgeous photos. How exciting to see those seals just lying there sunbathing. I'm glad you all had life vests on.
You are for sure having a very good day.
The pictures tell that.
good lord, I am packing our bags, we are gonna come visit ya!
oh Cheryl...I bet she really loved the trip...great photos...
What lovely pics, blue sky, kayaking and the most important things is spending good time together as a family. You guys have a beautiful Captain:)
Great photos, Cheryl. I've enjoyed taking this photo journey with you. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
It looks as if your niece had a great day for a kayak cruise. It was very nice of you and Mark to take her. I also like your bench.
What a lovely day on the water my friend.....Elizabeth has a wonderful Aunt and Uncle and I am sure she appreciates all that you do for her, now if we only could get some help for Mark lifting the kayack.....be well my friend...Hugs

Good thing Mark is strong and fit! That kayak looks pretty heavy. Your niece looks so happy to be sharing the kayaking adventure with you and Mark.
Betsy from Tennessee: Glad you enjoyed "the trip" with us. We are so fortunate to have my niece nearby so that we always can have a "kid" to do fun things with! And I am feeling pretty good...learning to adjust and adapt. But isn't that what life is all about??
Linda: Glad you had a great time on the water with us. I hope you can return to Maine some day!
Wanda: I am so fortunate to live where I do, the ocean nearby and an hour or two away from the mountains...and of course the people in my life make it even better!
grammyg: Glad you enjoyed the post, and yes indeed, we are very fortunate to live where we do!
Lin Floyd: Thanks. I didn't think I would enjoy kayaking but now I am hooked...its nice to be outside, exercise and lovely views as well.
Barb: Hello, so nice to hear from you. Have you ever tried kayaking? It makes me feel "like one with the water".
Kay: I loved seeing the seals on the ledges. They are huge and roly-poly. Oh yes, life jackets are standard equipment. We even have whistles attached to them as recommended "just in case". And I carry my cell phone in a waterproof bag.
rainfield61: When we are not out hiking we love being on the water.
Gary's third pottery blog: Come on up! We have a couple of tents....
Deb: yes she enjoyed the trip and was pretty proud of herself for being able to paddle so far!
yonca: Thank you! We are truly blessed to live in such a wonderful area with so much to do, hike and take photos in.
Carol Blackburn: Glad you "came along" with us.
George: I bet you and Betsy would enjoy kayaking. It really is great exercise and fun to be outside in the beautiful world.
Bernie: We so enjoy sharing activities with Miss Elizabeth. As for Mark, he says he doesn't mind dragging and lifting the kayak! I don't agree, its very heavy and I worry about his back. I did buy him a cart for wheeling along a canoe or kayak but he still doesn't use it.
A Peculiar Person: Thanks for coming by my blog and leaving your nice comment. I will certainly be by to check out yours.
Zooropa: A very good captain indeed. We didn't get too close to the seals and they were good about letting me take their photo!
Technobabe: Since my children are all grown-up, we have to borrow my nieces for fun activities! Luckily Elizabeth is game for any adventure.
Esther: Welcome to my blog, I hope you visit again. I shall check out yours as well.
What a great trip! I have never been in a kayak, and I have to say you make it look like it's definitely worth it!
Mare: Hello, glad you stopped by. I never had imagined I would so love being in a kayak...it is really fun and what a great way to look at the expensive homes and cottages in our area!!
Hello Cheryl, what a lovely adventure. I am a huge fan of day trips -especially spur-of-the moment ones (teehee) Looks as if Tiz really enjoyed herself! Yay! She's blessed to have Uncle Mark and Aunt Cheryl around! You've taken so many wonderful photos! :)
Wow how wonderful!
Have a great long weekend.
Ooooohhhh....how gorgeous are the views!! And 'that bench' is definitely at the right spot, like it can make you feel you're right on top of the world. Never mind you moving to my house, I think I want to move to where you live!! It's just heaven!
Tes: Hello! I too love the spur of the moment type trips..they turn out usually to be the best!
Regina: Hi and wishing you a nice long weekend as well!
Fely: I am so fortunate to live in such beautiful surroundings, ocean views and a few hours away the mountains. Best of all worlds! You should come visit one day!
Hello Cheryl! How patient Mark is with that Kayak. He seems not to mind, maybe for the love of you guys! How sweet!
Beautiful place! Thanks for sharing!
